Lockheed Martin has outlined an integrated missile-defence architecture that places the F-35 Lightning II in a broader sensing and targeting role for U.S. air defence. Under the concept, the fighter would contribute tracking data as an airborne node linked to space-based sensors, command-and-control networks and interceptors including THAAD and the planned Next Generation Interceptor.
The architecture is designed to compress the time between detection and engagement, improving the ability to track fast-moving threats and direct the most suitable interceptor before impact. In Lockheed Martin’s framing, the F-35 would function as part of a sensor-to-shooter chain that moves threat information across air, space, command and ground layers rather than operating solely as a tactical aircraft.
The proposal fits into wider U.S. layered missile defence efforts by connecting launch detection, battle management and interception within one networked concept. It also expands the aircraft’s operational relevance beyond conventional air-combat missions, although the material describes a concept rather than a procurement decision, flight test or fielded capability.
