India’s Ministry of Defence has begun formal efforts to join the French-led Future Combat Air System sixth-generation fighter programme, in a disclosure to Parliament on 7 August. The move places India alongside France in a programme that changed shape after Germany exited the joint fighter effort in June, while India continues work on its own Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft project.
The ministry’s update was presented to the Lok Sabha and laid before the Rajya Sabha through a report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence. It described the push as a concerted effort to co-join FCAS, signalling interest in a programme intended to develop a next-generation combat-aircraft family and associated systems.
No details were given on the form India may seek, such as observer status, development participation, industrial workshare or access to specific technologies. The disclosure comes amid wider India-France defence cooperation, including discussions around a possible order for 114 Rafale fighters and broader co-development and co-production ties between the two countries.
