Leipzig/Halle Airport perimeter breach closes northern runway

A damaged security fence at Leipzig/Halle Airport triggered a police operation overnight, with the northern runway closed and flight operations on the airport’s north side suspended. The breach was found shortly before 23:00 near parked Russian Antonov cargo aircraft. The southern runway and associated logistics operations remained open while federal and state police searched the site.

Investigators believe a vehicle probably broke through the fence from outside, but the vehicle, its driver and the motive had not been identified. An initial search found no unauthorised people or suspicious objects on the airport grounds, although additional forces were expected to continue checking the site.

The incident temporarily restricted airport operations rather than stopping traffic completely. The northern runway serves the airport’s passenger-side activity, while the southern runway supports its logistics operations. Authorities have not established whether anyone entered the secure area, and the available information does not indicate whether the damage was deliberate, accidental or connected to the Antonov aircraft. The investigation remains open in all directions.
