Korean Air has completed the modernisation of its cargo terminal at Seoul-Incheon International Airport, placing the facility into operation as a fully integrated Smart Terminal. The upgrade introduced automated handling systems that have increased hourly unit load device processing capacity from 18 to 30 units, while total cargo-handling capacity is expected to rise by more than 25%.
The project ran from June 2025 to September 2026 while cargo operations continued. Automated guided vehicles and newly installed elevating transfer vehicles now support cargo movements and heavy-equipment operations, reducing manual handling points. The terminal’s bypass infrastructure was expanded from one automated transfer line to two.
The facility covers approximately 100,000 square metres and includes expanded capabilities for special cargo, including temperature-sensitive shipments. Korean Air’s Cool Cargo Center at Incheon can store and process more than 150 tonnes of fresh cargo at a time.
Infrastructure work also included improved air conditioning for cold weather and LED lighting upgrades, supporting workplace safety and operating conditions. Korean Air is pursuing a similar modernisation of its cargo terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, with completion planned for 2027.
