JetBlue cancelled two Boston-Barcelona flights after the pilots assigned to operate them were delayed on domestic positioning journeys and could not reach the transatlantic sector within duty-time limits. The cancellations affected JetBlue flight 345 from Boston Logan to Barcelona on 6 August and again on 8 August, disrupting one of the carrier’s higher-profile European routes.
The pilots were travelling as passengers on earlier domestic services from New York JFK to Boston, but those feeder flights ran late, leaving no legal way to keep the long-haul roster intact. The sequence highlights how tightly crew timing is managed on transatlantic operations, where replacement crews are harder to source at short notice because qualified long-haul pilots are required.
The cancellations came amid wider operational strain for JetBlue, which has been dealing with weather-related disruption and air-traffic-control restrictions in the northeastern United States. Those pressures have already affected several of its European services, but the Barcelona case stands out because the same flight was cancelled twice within days for the same underlying crew-positioning problem.
