Greece has signed a contract for three Embraer KC-390 Millennium aircraft, with options for a further three, under a government-to-government agreement with Portugal. Signed in Athens on 2 November, the deal provides for the Hellenic Air Force to receive its first aircraft in 2027. The KC-390s are intended to expand Greece’s airlift and air-to-air refuelling capabilities and improve interoperability with NATO and allied forces.
Portugal will support the programme through European cooperation in training, logistics and support. The agreement covers three aircraft; the additional three remain options and are not confirmed orders. No contract value or detailed delivery schedule beyond the first aircraft’s arrival in 2027 was disclosed in the available announcement.
The KC-390 is designed for transport and a range of other missions, including airdrops, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting and humanitarian operations. It can operate from temporary or unpaved runways and, when equipped for air-to-air refuelling, can serve as either a tanker or receiver. Greece becomes the seventh European country to select the type, joining Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic and Sweden.
