Google has won a bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines’ internal business data and software, agreeing to pay $10 million for a deidentified package intended for product development and AI model training. The deal, tied to Spirit’s proceedings in the Southern District of New York, is due to face bankruptcy-court review on 19 August.
The sale covers operational and business records rather than customer-profile or payment data. Reporting on the filing describes emails, Teams messages, spreadsheets, calendars and related corporate material among the assets, while a third party will remove personally identifiable information before transfer.
Spirit’s adviser PJT Partners handled the process as part of the airline’s broader restructuring and asset sale. Mercor was reported to have submitted a lower competing bid of $7.5 million. The transaction highlights how bankrupt-company datasets have become valuable inputs for AI development, especially where they capture internal communications, scheduling, pricing and operations data.
