Gatwick runway reopens after aircraft stalls during take-off

London Gatwick Airport reopened its main runway on Friday after a departing aircraft became stranded during take-off operations, briefly halting arrivals and departures at one of the UK’s busiest single-runway hubs. The airport closed the runway for about 50 minutes while the aircraft was removed and safety checks were completed, before flights resumed.

The disruption triggered immediate knock-on effects across the schedule, with some services diverted to other airports, including London Stansted and Birmingham. Gatwick handled the incident as an operational safety issue rather than a wider emergency, and the runway returned to service after a full inspection. The aircraft involved was towed clear of the runway before operations restarted.

The cause was described only as a technical issue with a departing aircraft, and no further mechanical detail has been confirmed. Even so, the short closure was enough to disrupt traffic across the airport because Gatwick relies on a single active runway for routine operations.
