French Patroller sighting over Poland was likely a Border Guard aircraft

A flight-tracking display that appeared to show a French Safran Patroller over northern Poland near the Belarus border was most likely a Polish Border Guard Stemme ASP S15-1 crewed surveillance aircraft. The misidentification centred on a track near the Białowieża Forest, where the aircraft was seen flying along the frontier. The confusion arose because the tracking platform used the same S15U type code for both the Patroller and the Border Guard’s Stemme-derived aircraft.

The Polish Border Guard operates two ASP S15-1 aircraft, registered SP-VSO and SP-VSP, for surveillance missions along land and maritime borders and for monitoring low-flying aircraft and other objects near the frontier. Those aircraft have been in service since September 2015 and carry optoelectronic systems for long-range observation. The Patroller itself is based on the Stemme S15 motor glider, which helps explain why tracker data can blur the distinction between the two platforms. Similar confusion has surfaced before, including a comparable track in September 2025 that was later tied to a Polish Border Guard aircraft.
