FAA’s eVTOL Pilot Programme Expands Across 26 US States

The FAA’s three-year eVTOL Integration Pilot Programme has begun advanced-air-mobility flight demonstrations across the United States, using business-aviation and general-aviation airports to test passenger, cargo, medical and autonomous operations. Eight projects involving aircraft from BETA Technologies, Joby Aviation and other developers span 26 states, with planned activities including passenger flights from New York’s Downtown Manhattan Heliport and regional connectivity in Texas.

The programme’s first operation took place in July, when BETA, United Therapeutics and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation flight-tested organ-transport capabilities between Virginia and Maryland. The mission formed part of a wider effort to examine how electric aircraft and other advanced-air-mobility vehicles can support time-sensitive medical logistics.

Other demonstrations cover regional air links, cargo and personnel transport, wildfire response, search and rescue, emergency medical services and autonomous flight. Louisiana-led operations are targeting energy-industry locations in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi, while Utah partners have tested electric aircraft and regional delivery of medical cargo, including radiopharmaceuticals.

The FAA plans to use operational data to assess safety risks, redundancy, weather and operating constraints, mitigation measures, training and future performance standards. Participation does not authorise unrestricted commercial service or replace formal aircraft certification; each aircraft and operation remains subject to FAA safety requirements.
