The German Aerospace Center has opened a Technology Center for Drone Security at its site in Cochstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, to develop and test systems for detecting and countering malicious drones under realistic conditions. The facility is designed to link research with the operational needs of security authorities as Germany expands its drone-defence capabilities, with Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Research Minister Dorothee Bär and Saxony-Anhalt Minister-President Sven Schulze among those attending the opening.
The centre forms part of a broader national approach to drone defence alongside the federal-state drone defence centre and a drone-defence unit within the federal police. DLR is positioning Cochstedt, together with its Braunschweig site, as a Germany-wide setup that combines scientific work with practical security requirements.
The focus is on threats to airports, industrial sites, military facilities and public spaces, where unmanned aircraft can disrupt operations or endanger safety.
