American Airlines to anchor Phoenix Sky Harbor’s new West Terminal

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has chosen American Airlines as the primary carrier for its planned West Terminal, the first new terminal project at the airport in nearly four decades. The facility will be part of the long-term Destination PHX 2050 programme and is designed to serve rising international traffic while accommodating additional wide-body aircraft.

American is already the largest airline in Phoenix by traffic, operating more than 300 peak daily departures from the airport and carrying over 20 million customers a year. The carrier also accounts for more than 40% of Sky Harbor’s traffic, giving formal structure to an existing hub position that has grown over many years.

The West Terminal is planned for the area between Terminal 3 and an adjacent taxiway, with local reporting indicating construction could begin in late 2029 and opening is targeted for late 2033. The project remains at the planning stage, leaving the timetable subject to future design, funding and delivery milestones.
