Air India starts construction of new MRO hangar at Delhi airport

Air India has broken ground on a nine-acre Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul hangar at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The facility is designed to accommodate one widebody and one narrowbody aircraft simultaneously, centralising inspections, cabin maintenance and defect rectification under the airline’s direct operational oversight to reduce ground time and improve fleet availability.

Air India and Delhi International Airport Ltd. executives attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Tewolde Gebremariam. Once completed, the hangar is expected to be the first facility in Delhi with simultaneous widebody and narrowbody capacity.

Integrated engineering offices, an on-site spare-parts warehouse and a dedicated cabin shop will support faster workflows, reduce logistics costs and lessen reliance on third-party maintenance providers. Direct access to technical teams and spares is also intended to accelerate the recovery of aircraft grounded for technical reasons.

The design includes a 25-metre clear height, large column-free spans for future aircraft types and advanced fire-protection systems. It will also follow Indian Green Building Council norms for energy and water conservation. Air India has not disclosed the project cost, construction schedule or completion date.
