American Airlines Flight 41, a Boeing 787-8 flying from Barcelona to Chicago O’Hare, suffered a tyre failure after landing on Tuesday following a reported brake problem. The aircraft landed safely at about 2:30 p.m. local time, but could not continue normally to the gate. Its 234 passengers and 11 crew members disembarked using mobile stairs and were taken to the terminal by bus.
The crew reported a brake issue before the tyre failure, and radio traffic indicated that the right brake might have been dragging. The available information does not establish whether the brake problem caused the tyre failure, however, and the precise number of damaged tyres remains unclear.
First responders met the aircraft as a precaution. American Airlines removed the 787 from service for inspection by its maintenance team. The airline reported no injuries, while the Chicago Fire Department said one person was taken to hospital in good condition.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. The agency has not identified the cause of the brake issue or tyre failure.
