Lufthansa is preparing to retire its remaining Airbus A340-600 aircraft after more than 23 years of passenger service. The final scheduled operation is flight LH419 from Washington Dulles International Airport to Frankfurt on 18 October 2026, with departure planned for 17:55 local time and arrival at 07:55 the following morning. The withdrawal will end Lufthansa’s scheduled operations with the stretched four-engine widebody.
Lufthansa Group confirmed in April that its last four A340-600s would leave the fleet in October as part of a programme to reduce costs, simplify long-haul operations and accelerate the transition to newer twin-engine aircraft. The remaining aircraft have mainly operated transatlantic services between Frankfurt, New York and Washington.
Lufthansa introduced the A340-600 in 2003 and took delivery of 24 aircraft between 2003 and 2009. Their service was interrupted only by the COVID-19 pandemic before the type returned to selected long-haul routes. The Washington–Frankfurt service is expected to continue with an Airbus A340-300.
The retirement will not immediately end Lufthansa’s use of four-engine passenger aircraft. The group will continue to operate the A340-300, Airbus A380 and Boeing 747, while newer types including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 increasingly replace older widebodies. The aircraft assigned to LH419 had not been independently confirmed, and the final operation remained subject to schedule or equipment changes.
