Austrian Airlines is examining up to three new long-haul destinations in Asia-Pacific as it modernises and expands its Vienna-based fleet. The carrier has not identified potential destinations or set launch dates, frequencies or aircraft assignments. The review comes as Austrian prepares to retire its remaining Boeing 767s by December 2026, while its Boeing 777 fleet is expected to remain in service until 2028.
Chief executive Annette Mann told Singapore-based CNA that demand for nonstop travel between Europe and Asia remains strong despite higher fares. Austrian has already increased service on existing routes to Tokyo and Bangkok, while its wider long-haul fleet transition is expected to provide additional capacity for network development.
The airline is replacing older long-haul aircraft with newer Boeing 787-9s. However, the potential Asian expansion remains at the planning stage: no route, destination, schedule or start date has been approved. Any additions would build on Austrian’s existing Vienna network in the region rather than represent a confirmed near-term launch.
