Reports: UAE detains two more flydubai pilots

Two Maldivian pilots employed by flydubai have reportedly been taken into UAE police custody as investigators widen their inquiry into an alleged attempted hijacking or terrorist attack involving flight FZ1073. The Boeing 737 was operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv on 30 September when an Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked the Indian captain and tried to seize control of the aircraft. The detentions could broaden the investigation beyond the flight’s crew.

The two pilots were reportedly detained on 3 October, three days after the incident. Their families were informed through the Maldivian Embassy in the UAE, and the men are understood to be among six Maldivian pilots working for flydubai. They were not aboard FZ1073.

Media reports have described professional or personal links between the detained pilots and the co-pilot, Hammam al-Hammami, including claims that they lived in the same building and had operated flights to Israel. UAE authorities have not disclosed the specific allegations, evidence or formal legal status of the pair. No charges have been publicly reported, and the detentions do not establish involvement in the alleged plot.

The UAE Public Prosecution has reportedly indicated that al-Hammami claimed to have acted alone, while investigators continue examining his contacts and whether anyone knew about or assisted the alleged plan. The case is placing additional scrutiny on cockpit security, crew vetting and recruitment practices at the Dubai-based airline.
