Construction begins on 20,000-capacity arena near Munich Airport

Construction of the Munich Arena began on 28 October with a groundbreaking ceremony in Freising, next to Munich Airport. The privately financed, approximately €400 million project is being developed by SWMunich Real Estate in partnership with concert promoter Live Nation. Designed for around 20,000 spectators, the venue is scheduled to open in 2029 and will form part of an entertainment campus that also includes a hotel.

The arena is planned primarily for live music, with facilities for concert production and backstage operations. Its design is by Populous, with HENN responsible for detailed planning and delivery. Project specifications put the building at about 34 metres high and 100 metres in diameter.

The venue is included in Munich’s proposed plans for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Olympic and Paralympic Games. If the city secures a Games, the arena could host swimming and para-swimming with a temporary pool; that use remains conditional. A Deloitte study cited by the project estimates annual gross value added of about €355 million once the venue is operating. This is a forecast, not a realised economic impact.
