Japan Airlines orders 16 Embraer E190-E2s with 10 options

Japan Airlines has selected Embraer’s E190-E2 to renew the regional fleet of subsidiary J-AIR, placing a firm order for 16 aircraft and taking options for 10 more. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in fiscal 2029, with the jets set to replace J-AIR’s existing E170 and E190 fleet serving domestic routes from Osaka International Airport, or Itami.

The potential 26-aircraft fleet will support J-AIR’s network across Japan as the JAL Group maintains and develops domestic services, including links to regional communities. The transaction value was not disclosed, and the airline has not specified the E190-E2 configuration or initial route assignments.

The aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1900G engines and typically accommodate between 97 and 114 passengers. The E190-E2 is expected to provide a more modern platform for J-AIR while increasing capacity flexibility and improving operating economics, passenger comfort and environmental performance compared with the aircraft it replaces.

The order follows rival All Nippon Airways’ selection of the E190-E2, indicating growing interest in the type among Japan’s major airline groups. Fiscal 2029 begins on 1 April 2029 and ends on 31 March 2030.
