SpaceX to buy Grain Management’s 800 MHz spectrum portfolio

SpaceX has agreed to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide low-band spectrum licence portfolio in the 800 MHz band, in a move that could accelerate its push into US mobile services through Starlink Mobile. The portfolio covers up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum and remains subject to approval from the US Federal Communications Commission.

The spectrum is intended to complement SpaceX’s existing 2 GHz mid-band holdings, giving the company broader coverage and stronger indoor penetration. SpaceX wants to combine satellite and terrestrial connectivity in a hybrid network that can serve ordinary smartphones, putting it closer to established mobile operators in the US market.

The 800 MHz licences had previously been held by T-Mobile before being transferred to Grain in August. The sale to SpaceX comes after that earlier transaction and reflects growing interest in low-band spectrum for direct-to-device services, where propagation characteristics are critical for coverage in buildings and other hard-to-reach locations.

The deal has already rattled telecom shares, underlining investor concern that SpaceX could emerge as a new competitor to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Financial terms were not disclosed.
