American Airlines adds automatic seat monitoring in app for AAdvantage members

American Airlines has launched an in-app seat-monitoring feature that automatically moves eligible AAdvantage members to a preferred seat when one becomes available. The tool, available in the American app, lets solo travellers on single-passenger bookings choose seat preferences such as window, aisle or middle, with changes limited to the same cabin and no extra seat charge.

The feature works only for eligible AAdvantage members with assigned seats and stops within 24 hours of departure. Once a matching seat opens up, the app updates the reservation and sends a notification, removing the need for repeated seat-map checks before a flight. American will not move customers into higher-priced paid seats, even if those seats match their preferences.

The airline framed the update as a convenience measure within its mobile app, which already supports seat selection and other trip-management functions. The new option adds another layer of automation for customers who want a better chance of securing a preferred seat without manually monitoring availability.
