Lufthansa’s Frankfurt-to-Toronto flight LH470 diverted to Manchester on Saturday after the crew declared an emergency over Scottish airspace, landing the Boeing 747-400 safely with 371 passengers on board. The aircraft, registered D-ABVY, was met by emergency services after touchdown, and Lufthansa cited a cabin odour as the reason for the diversion.
The crew selected transponder code 7700 to secure priority handling, a standard signal for a general emergency. Because the jet was heavily fuelled for the transatlantic sector, fire crews carried out a precautionary inspection after landing, with checks focused on the brakes and landing gear. Passengers were able to disembark normally, while the return service from Toronto to Frankfurt was cancelled.
The aircraft remained under technical inspection after the stop in Manchester, and some reports indicated that travellers were accommodated in hotels overnight with a replacement continuation to Toronto planned for the following day. The precise cause of the odour was not confirmed, and no fire or smoke was established.
