Airbus identifies coating defect in A321neo fuselage

Airbus has identified a quality issue in the A321neo fuselage involving a deviation in the surface protection coating on stringers in the lower forward section. The aircraft can keep operating because the problem is not a safety risk, and a remedy is available. The issue affects about 500 aircraft, including roughly 250 already in service and 250 in production, while the A321XLR is not affected.

The defect was found during standard rework on the production line, where Airbus traced and contained the source. All newly coated stringers now meet requirements. Customers are still taking deliveries, with no immediate need for repair before operation or handover, and Airbus has kept its 2026 delivery target unchanged after disclosing the problem.

The A321neo is Airbus’s highest-volume narrowbody, making any fuselage quality issue a watchpoint for production control and supply-chain oversight. Public reporting has not named the supplier involved, and some details on scope came from industry sources rather than Airbus itself.
