Airbus flags A321neo quality defect but keeps aircraft flying

Airbus has identified a quality defect in the fuselage structure of its A321neo jet and said the problem does not create a safety risk, allowing aircraft to remain in service. The issue affects about 500 aircraft in total, including roughly 250 already delivered and 250 in production, and comes as the manufacturer works through potential rework on its best-selling single-aisle programme.

The defect involves a deviation in the surface protection applied to stringers in the lower front section of the fuselage, discovered during rework on the production line. Airbus has contained the source of the problem and has a remedy available. The matter is expected to add work to the production system and to airline maintenance planning, although the company has kept its 2026 delivery target unchanged and does not expect a major near-term hit to output. Regulators could still require repairs within a set timeframe.
