Azerbaijan suspends Iranian airline flights after new US sanctions

Azerbaijan has suspended flights operated by Iranian airlines to the country after the latest US sanctions targeted Iran’s aviation sector. The restriction took effect on 22 September and affects service into Azerbaijani airports, while Azerbaijan Airlines’ own regional operations were not reported to be part of the measure.

The move follows a new round of US Treasury sanctions aimed at carriers, airports and service providers supporting Iranian aviation. Azerbaijani civil aviation authorities linked the decision directly to those measures and advised passengers with affected bookings to contact their airlines or ticket sellers.

The suspension comes as pressure on Iranian carriers is spreading across the region, with neighbouring countries also tightening access around the same time. One report indicated that Azerbaijan Airlines had not recently been operating flights to Iran, and that the restriction should not affect its Nakhchivan service, which is routed separately.
