American Airlines flight diverted to Baltimore after passenger restrained with zip ties and duct tape

American Airlines diverted a Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark flight to Baltimore/Washington International Airport after a disruptive passenger was restrained by crew and fellow travellers using zip ties and duct tape. The aircraft landed safely and law enforcement met it on arrival before taking the man into custody.

The passenger has been identified in coverage as 67-year-old Arthur Lundeen of Arizona. Reports say his behaviour escalated during the flight, including abusive language and an alleged assault on a seatmate, prompting onboard intervention to keep him under control until landing. Care was taken not to tape over his mouth so he could breathe.

The incident has drawn attention to how airlines manage violent or disruptive behaviour in the cabin, where restraint kits and improvised materials can be used as a last resort. It also highlights differences in airline policy: some carriers allow duct tape in restraint kits, while others restrict its use internally. The FBI and Maryland Transportation Authority Police are investigating the case, and possible federal penalties remain under review.
