Google expands Cathay Pacific contrail-avoidance trials across Asia-Pacific network

Google is expanding its AI-based contrail-avoidance trial with Cathay Pacific across the airline’s Asia-Pacific and trans-Pacific network after an initial operational programme covering more than 100 flights. More than 80 of those flights followed contrail-avoidance routes, with Google estimating a 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails from the trial flights.

Cathay Pacific is Google’s first commercial airline partner in Asia for the initiative and the first airline globally to test the technology on ultra-long-haul routes. The system combines AI prediction, satellite imagery, weather intelligence and Cathay’s flight-planning tools to help pilots and dispatchers make small altitude adjustments to avoid airspace where persistent contrails are likely to form.

The Hong Kong-Singapore corridor emerged as a key test route and accounted for more than half of the trial’s total emissions-reduction effect. Google is also working with Contrails.org as the programme widens, as aviation continues to look for practical ways to cut climate impacts without changing aircraft hardware or core operating procedures.
