A Boeing 767-300F flying for Amazon Air through 21 Air overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people and injuring five others. The cargo flight, 2I7598, had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and briefly shut down airport operations after crossing the perimeter fence and entering an area outside the airfield.
The aircraft struck several vehicles after leaving the runway, forcing a temporary halt to arrivals and the closure of all runways for part of the afternoon. Miami-Dade authorities later confirmed the fatalities and said three of the injured were in critical condition. The Federal Aviation Administration opened an investigation, with the National Transportation Safety Board also sending a team to the scene.
The aircraft was a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter that had previously flown as a passenger jet before entering cargo service. The cause of the overrun remained unclear, and investigators had not yet determined why the aircraft failed to stop on the runway.
