Isar Aerospace reaches orbit in historic Andøya launch

Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket reached orbit after lifting off from Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway, giving the German start-up a landmark success in Europe’s commercial launch race. Reuters reported that the uncrewed mission was the first commercial flight to reach orbit from continental Europe, after the rocket climbed from the Norwegian site on Saturday.

The flight strengthens Europe’s domestic launch capability at a time when governments and private operators are pressing for greater independence in access to space. Spectrum is designed for small and medium-sized payloads, and the mission carried several satellites plus an in-flight technology experiment. Isar has been building up operations at Andøya and had previously faced a scrub on 4 September before the successful launch the following day.

The result moves Isar beyond launch development and into practical orbital service, a step that could support future commercial and institutional small-satellite missions from Europe. It also comes after the company secured business and programme backing through work with customers such as Astroscale and through European launcher funding initiatives.
