BER Terminal 1 evacuated after hazardous materials alert

Berlin Brandenburg Airport evacuated the public area of Terminal 1 on Thursday evening after a hazardous materials alert was triggered by a woman who told federal police she had a dangerous substance in her handbag. Officers detained the woman as emergency teams checked the bag, while flight operations were partly maintained and arriving aircraft continued to land.

BER cleared the terminal’s public area at about 17:45 and shifted passenger processing to Terminal 2 where possible. Departures already ready to leave were allowed to take off, helping limit wider disruption, although the scale of delays and cancellations was not immediately clear. Rail access to the airport was also hit briefly, with S-Bahn and regional services affected during the police operation.
