Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency has ordered its first Airbus H160, selecting the twin-engine helicopter for emergency response duties in Kumamoto prefecture, Kyushu. The aircraft will support rapid aerial reconnaissance and live visual intelligence gathering during major natural disasters, including a potential Nankai trough megaquake, as the agency expands its nationwide response capability.
The H160 will join FDMA’s existing helicopter fleet and is intended to improve speed, coverage and reaction times during large-scale emergencies. Airbus has also fitted the programme with HeliSat satellite technology so the aircraft can stream high-definition data directly to orbit when ground infrastructure is damaged.
Airbus is developing custom snow landing gear for Japanese winter operations. Four H160s are already in service in Japan across law enforcement, electronic news gathering and municipal firefighting roles, giving the type an established presence in the country’s public-service market.
