Namibia’s Works and Transport Ministry has distanced itself from an “unauthorised” document that raised questions about discussions with Ethiopian Airlines over the planned Namibia Air national carrier in Windhoek. The document referenced a possible counter-proposal and technical cooperation, but the government has not confirmed any final partnership, management role or equity deal with the Ethiopian flag carrier.
The dispute has emerged amid scrutiny from an opposition lawmaker over a N$20 million feasibility study linked to Namibia Air. Ethiopian Airlines has been mentioned in connection with possible support for the project, but the latest official reaction leaves the status of those talks unclear. The ministry’s position introduces fresh uncertainty around the authenticity of the document while stopping short of confirming that the airline was ever formally authorised to negotiate on the government’s behalf.
Namibia Air remains a politically sensitive programme as the government continues work on establishing the national airline. For now, the verified position is limited to the ministry’s rejection of the disputed paper and the absence of any confirmed agreement with Ethiopian Airlines.
