German investigators have identified two suspected participants in the attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport in Saxony, the latest development in a case that began in early August when a drone carrying explosives was found near the airport. The probe centres on attempted causing of an explosive blast at one of Germany’s key cargo and passenger hubs, while the suspected roles point to an operation linked to Russian and Belarusian nationals.
The men are described as a Russian-born suspect with Latvian nationality and passport, and a Belarusian suspect holding a Russian passport. One is reported to have acted as a logistician or instructor, while the other was linked to DNA traces recovered at the scene. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Criminal Police Office are involved in the investigation, which also drew on European database checks and other records. The German government has already attributed the attack to Russia, but the suspects have not been formally confirmed in a public statement by prosecutors.
