United Airlines has opened bookings for the first domestic deployments of its Airbus A321XLR, placing the long-range narrowbody on Washington Dulles–San Diego from 9 September and Washington Dulles–Los Angeles from 1 October. The aircraft will operate these premium transcontinental services through 30 November before shifting to international flying on 1 December.
The assignments give United an early domestic proving ground for the type before its long-haul debut. The A321XLR will replace standard narrowbody capacity on select Washington Dulles departures and bring a more premium onboard product to the two west coast routes. The aircraft was delivered earlier in 2026, with the airline’s transatlantic launch planned for December.
Using the A321XLR first on U.S. trunk routes follows a growing pattern among airlines introducing the type, which is designed to combine narrowbody economics with extended range. For United, the short-term domestic schedule provides operational familiarity before the aircraft enters international service.
