Spirit AeroSystems workers in Wichita are focusing on reducing “traveled work” as Boeing pushes to improve 737 production efficiency following its acquisition of the Tier 1 supplier. The issue, which involves tasks or parts moving to another station or facility for completion, is seen inside the operation as a major drag on throughput and a barrier to higher output.
The latest report from AIN Online, tied to Leeham News and Analysis, centres on the former Spirit facility in Wichita, Kansas, where Boeing is trying to streamline assembly flow and raise the rate of 737 production. Workers interviewed for the report indicated that progress on cutting traveled work matters to the wider effort to stabilise the line and keep aircraft moving through the process with fewer delays.
Boeing has been working to improve production efficiency across the 737 programme as it integrates Spirit’s operations. The emphasis on reducing work that has to be shifted elsewhere reflects the company’s broader push to limit disruption, improve conformity at source and support a smoother build process at the Wichita site.
