Frontier Airlines has agreed to end leases on 13 Airbus A320neo aircraft early and to take 10 Airbus A321neo jets from AerCap, keeping capacity broadly steady while moving toward a smaller, more productive fleet. The Denver-based carrier plans to remove the A320neos from service in the second half of 2026 and begin receiving the A321neos from the final quarter of 2026 through the first quarter of 2027.
The lease reshuffle is designed to lower operating costs and trim maintenance exposure without materially reducing network capacity. Frontier has indicated the early returns will reduce operating lease right-of-use assets and liabilities by about $260 million, alongside expected non-cash charges of $60 million to $80 million and cash charges of $90 million to $120 million. Some of the cash settlement is due later, extending into 2028 and 2029.
Frontier had the A320neos under contract for another six to seven years, but opted to accelerate the fleet change as it continues to favour higher-capacity A321neo aircraft. The airline has framed the move as a way to preserve similar seat capacity with fewer aircraft, taking advantage of the A321neo’s greater productivity and flexibility on its US network.
