Isar Aerospace has signed a contract with the European Space Agency under the European Launcher Challenge, securing about €200 million in programme commitments to support its Spectrum launcher and related infrastructure. The Munich-based company said the funding will accelerate next-generation vehicle development and expand test and launch capacity as Europe seeks stronger independent launch capability.
Reuters identified the award as the largest of the first three contracts announced under the programme, while ESA material puts the value at €197.8 million. Germany is providing the main funding, with Austria and Norway also contributing. The programme is backed by more than €900 million from ESA member states, and the contracts are milestone-based rather than paid upfront.
ESA’s challenge is designed to widen competition among European launch providers and improve the continent’s commercial launch options. Isar Aerospace is developing the Spectrum two-stage rocket and is preparing further launch activity from Andøya Spaceport in Norway, where the company has built its dedicated launch pad.
