IndiGo’s parent InterGlobe Aviation is in early talks with Embraer over a possible order for E2 regional jets that could replace part of its ATR turboprop fleet and add capacity on thinner domestic routes in India. The discussions remain confidential and no aircraft number, delivery schedule or commercial terms have been disclosed.
The potential move would mark a notable shift for IndiGo, whose fleet has been built largely around Airbus narrowbodies and ATR turboprops. The airline had 441 aircraft as of March, including about 46 ATRs, and the Embraer option is being viewed as a way to carry more passengers on regional services while staying within slot and network limits.
If the talks progress, the deal could give Embraer a stronger foothold in India’s fast-growing domestic market and would broaden IndiGo’s fleet mix. It would also add new operational complexity, including training, maintenance and spares support, at a carrier known for standardisation across its fleet.
