Lufthansa and pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit have agreed a framework for arbitration and mediation to resolve their labour dispute, covering Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa CityLine and Eurowings. The deal, reported on Monday, is intended to address pension and retirement benefits as well as broader pay issues, while ruling out new pilot strikes for now and helping stabilise schedules during the summer travel period.
The structure goes beyond a standard one-off arbitration and includes three separate arbitration tracks alongside mediation on wider questions about the Lufthansa Group’s future and competitiveness. The agreement also sets out exit clauses for both sides if the process breaks down, although the confidential details have not been made public.
Lufthansa has been hit by repeated industrial action in recent years, adding pressure on operations and costs. Management is presenting the move as a step towards more durable social peace and a less confrontational relationship with unions, with the aim of shifting disputes from disruption to negotiation.
