A new express bus route will connect St Helens town centre with Liverpool John Lennon Airport from 6 September under the X3 number. The direct service is being introduced as part of the return of public control over bus operations in St Helens, and is designed to give faster access to the airport for local residents and passengers across the wider Liverpool City Region.
The route is expected to provide direct public transport access to the airport in under an hour for more than 25,000 residents, with more than 100,000 people able to reach it in under 80 minutes via onward rail and bus links. The service will use newly built, publicly owned, UK-made low-emission buses in the region’s yellow and grey Metro livery.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport chief executive John Irving welcomed the improved connectivity, saying the airport has more flights to more destinations than at any point in its history. The X3 is part of wider work to improve access to the airport, alongside funding for a new rapid transit system aimed at cutting journey times between Liverpool city centre, the airport and the football stadiums.
