The Indian Air Force’s Rafale fighters have made their first appearance at Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in northern Australia, joining a multinational air combat drill that ran from 20 July to 7 August. Australia’s Defence Department described the debut as historic, with the aircraft operating alongside forces from multiple Indo-Pacific partners in high-tempo training focused on coalition interoperability.
Pitch Black 2026 brought together 21 nations, more than 100 aircraft and about 2,500 personnel, underlining its role as one of the region’s largest air warfare exercises. The Indian contingent reportedly included four Rafales, two C-17 transport aircraft and 120 personnel, giving New Delhi a visible presence in a major international exercise environment.
The Rafale’s participation extends the aircraft’s operational footprint in the Indo-Pacific and reflects India’s growing engagement in multinational airpower training. The exercise format is designed to test complex air operations in challenging visibility conditions, with participants working through scenarios intended to sharpen tactics, coordination and command integration across allied and partner air forces.
