Police units have begun a foot search along the northern runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport after recent drone incidents linked to the discovery of an explosive-laden drone on the southern runway. The northern strip was closed from 10:00 local time while officers, including a large police contingent, inspected the area for a second unidentified flying object.
The operation was under way on Sunday and followed an earlier search of the same area on Thursday. Saxony’s state criminal police office had indicated that the search for the second drone would continue, while airport officials did not initially disclose exactly what the teams were looking for.
Passenger operations were not affected, but the temporary closure highlighted the operational vulnerability of a major German cargo and passenger airport to drone incursions. Leipzig/Halle is one of Germany’s key freight hubs, and the incident has prompted a continued law-enforcement and security response around the airfield.
