Lufthansa diverted a Boeing 747-8 operating flight LH573 from Johannesburg to Frankfurt to Brazzaville after an undefined cabin odour was detected on board. The aircraft landed safely in the Republic of Congo with 363 passengers and 16 crew members, and the airline arranged a replacement 747-8 to recover the passengers and support checks on the stranded jet.
The crew declared an emergency by selecting transponder code 7700 before landing, and no injuries were reported. The aircraft, registered D-ABYO, remains in Brazzaville for technical inspection while Lufthansa works to determine the source of the smell.
The diversion disrupted a scheduled long-haul service linking South Africa and Germany and required an operational response involving another widebody aircraft. Lufthansa sent the replacement flight from Frankfurt as LH9872 with technicians on board, underlining the scale of the recovery effort for a transcontinental service outside the carrier’s home base.
