Cathay Pacific will buy 14 additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft, taking its total commitment for the type to 35 firm orders with options for seven more. Deliveries are expected from 2034, as the Hong Kong-based carrier aligns long-term widebody growth with the expansion of Hong Kong International Airport’s three-runway system.
The latest deal comes alongside Cathay’s interim results and extends a fleet plan built around future long-haul capacity and replacement needs. It also deepens the airline’s relationship with Boeing after a 12-year gap between transactions. The 777-9 remains central to Cathay’s long-haul strategy, with the aircraft intended to support traffic growth through the next decade.
The order places Cathay among the largest 777X customers, behind Emirates and Qatar Airways. For Hong Kong, the purchase adds further airline backing to the airport’s push to strengthen its role as an international hub, with passenger, flight and cargo volumes continuing to rise.
