Washington Dulles International Airport will undergo a multibillion-dollar modernisation programme worth about $22 billion to $22.5 billion, in a phased rebuild designed to turn the Virginia hub into a larger, more efficient international gateway for the US capital region. President Donald Trump is set to unveil the plan alongside Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, with United Airlines and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority central to the project.
The scheme covers more than 5 million square feet of new and renovated space, including new concourses, an expanded main terminal, upgraded security screening, baggage handling, parking and better pedestrian links. It also calls for replacing Dulles’s mobile lounges with an expanded AeroTrain system and additional walkways and tunnels, while preserving the Eero Saarinen-designed main terminal.
Funding is expected to come mainly through municipal bonds and airline contributions rather than direct federal support. The overhaul follows a December 2025 request for information and review of more than 30 proposals, indicating a longer-running effort to reshape the airport’s layout and capacity for future traffic growth.
