The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has dismantled C-1 prototype 28-1002 at Iruma Air Base, ending the type’s flying career after more than 50 years of service. The second prototype and last flying C-1 had been in storage for over 16 months before demolition began on 27 July, with the airframe largely reduced to scrap the same day and final tail removal due on 28 July. The aircraft carried a Phoenix commemorative livery in its final months, and the teardown reportedly began without prior engine removal, an uncommon step for JASDF retirements. For Japan’s post-war aerospace sector, the removal closes the book on a domestically built transport that defined an era.
