Airbus has initiated a production cutover to install Airspace XL overhead bins with flip-up lids on the A220 family, effective for aircraft delivered from 2026. These bins deliver 15% more storage volume and are 20% lighter than previous pivot designs, enabling stress-free boarding by accommodating one bag per passenger and reducing gate-check requirements. The weight reduction of approximately 300 lb per aircraft increases payload flexibility or lowers fuel burn while accelerating turnaround times through streamlined crew handling. Air Canada Rouge serves as the launch customer, with the new cabin architecture aligning the A220’s passenger experience with Airbus widebody standards across the fleet. Retrofit options for existing operators will follow the initial line-fit rollout.
