Saft batteries selected for WestJet’s Boeing 737 fleet

WestJet has selected Saft’s 539CH1 Ultra Low Maintenance batteries for its entire Boeing 737 fleet, replacing the batteries currently fitted across the aircraft. The 28-volt, 53-Ah nickel-based units are manufactured at Saft’s Valdosta, Georgia, facility and are designed to power critical standby systems and support auxiliary power unit starts. Boeing Distribution Inc. will supply the batteries and provide aftermarket support and logistics.

The agreement covers the fleet as a whole, but the number of aircraft, 737 variants, contract value and delivery schedule have not been disclosed. No timing was provided for the start or completion of the replacement programme.

WestJet’s supply-chain director cited fleet-wide standardisation as a benefit, with maintenance intervals and battery performance expected to support operational efficiency. Saft’s design emphasis is on long service life and reduced maintenance, factors relevant to aircraft availability and maintenance costs.

Saft is a wholly owned subsidiary of TotalEnergies. The selection extends its presence in the aviation market for 28-volt batteries.
