Air New Zealand takes delivery of first 787-9 with increased MTOW

Air New Zealand took delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 certified for an increased maximum takeoff weight, with aircraft ZK-NZT arriving in Auckland on 29 October. The added weight allowance gives the carrier more flexibility on long-haul flights, including the Auckland–New York route, to carry additional payload or extend range. It is the airline’s first new 787 in seven years; a second aircraft is expected within days.

The increased MTOW adds about 4,540 kg to the 787-9’s allowable takeoff weight. Depending on operating requirements, that can enable roughly three tonnes of additional payload or more than 300 nautical miles of extra range; the two benefits are alternatives, not simultaneous gains. The US Federal Aviation Administration certified the higher weight for the 787-9 and 787-10 in March 2026.

Both new aircraft are configured with 219 seats, including eight Business Premier Luxe seats. Air New Zealand had planned to introduce its Economy Skynest sleep pods in December, but outstanding approvals have pushed the launch until after the summer peak. The airline has not provided a revised introduction date.
