Lufthansa and Fraport open pilot ‘Gate of the Future’ at Frankfurt

Lufthansa and Fraport have opened a pilot “Gate of the Future” at Gate A16 in Terminal 1 at Frankfurt Airport, replacing most fixed-counter activity with mobile boarding staff and digital services. Employees equipped with tablets will assist passengers throughout the gate area with seat reservations, upgrades, rebookings and other queries, while a single fixed workstation remains for support.

The redesigned gate features large wall monitors and 360-degree displays showing departure times, boarding status, hand-luggage information and live gate-change updates. QR codes provide access to digital self-service options, including the Lufthansa app.

Lounge-style seating, flexible working cubes, increased privacy and selected artworks have replaced the conventional gate layout. Lufthansa and Fraport intend to use the live trial to assess whether the concept can make boarding faster and improve service for passengers and employees.

The partners have not set a timetable for wider deployment. Results from the pilot will determine whether individual features are introduced at other gates at Frankfurt Airport.
